Welcome to our programme for 2016/17. The departure of chair, Alex McMullen has left the club with a big hole. We all miss his guiding hand. Nevertheless, our work goes on and we are proud once again to present to you the finest of cinema from the previous year from the world over, from Estonia to Mauritania and from Argentina to Finland. Much of it is award-winning. Some of it is challenging and may be uncompromisingly brutal at times (though never, we trust, gratuitously); some is lighter, some more uplifting. The quality of story, humanity and cinematic skill are, as ever, our criteria.
French cinema is very popular, so we also have for you a French Film Season with films from many decades from the 1940s to the present day, directed by some of France’s most important and celebrated film-makers. Our Christmas film is the light-hearted but touching Philadelphia Story (made into High Society in the 1950s) and we have rare treat at the end of the season – the Russian silent Man with A Movie Camera. We hope you wish to see these films as they were created to be seen – on a cinema screen, with all its magic and atmosphere.
