Terence Davies. UK. 1988 (new print). 98 mins. Cert 15

Set in Liverpool in the 1940s and ‘50s, this now-classic film, newly restored, evokes family working-class life in the director’s home town. But this is no harsh realism, rather a piece of powerful visual poetry from a great, under-recognised British director. Pete Postlethwaite and Freda Dowie are the family’s father and mother.
