A piece of ‘Who-do-you-think-you-are-kidding-Mr-Hitler’ wartime propaganda, certainly, but this classic film, which evisages the presence of German troops on English soil preparing for an invasion, is also a beautifully cool, glowingly poetic account of the British character. And it took a non-British director to make it.
