Carol Reed. UK. 1947. 116 mins. Black & white. Cert PG.

Johnny McQueen (James Mason) is an IRA gunman in Belfast whose fund-raising robbery goes wrong. Injured and haunted by doubts about the cause, he flees to a bomb shelter to escape capture. His lover Kathleen goes in search of him as the police close in, and the tension rises. Film noir with Guinness perhaps, but brilliantly gripping.
