A masterpiece from Franceís master film-maker, La Grande Illusion is outwardly a World War 1 prison escape movie, but itís more a commentary on class. Renoir illustrates the class systemís barriers but also the way it can unite enemies, movingly so in the case of two aristocrats, the prison commandant (Erich von Stroheim) and the senior French officer (Pierre Fresnay).
